Living the New Life

Shooting Star

My neighbor and I was walking this morning around our neighborhood and we were looking at the stars and he made a statement that grabbed me.  He said, “They says that some of the stars that we are seeing now have actually burned out many years ago.”

How many of our “stars” in our churches have actually burned out a long time ago.  They are just continuing to put forth light off of  yesterday’s glory and power?   How many preachers do we have that are filling pulpits and are actually burned up instead of still on fire?  I wish and pray that God’s people will be full of the power and fire of the eternal flame of Christ Jesus.

Are you on fire or are you simply burned out but still shining off of yesterday’s flame?

Today is my lovely brides birthday.  I plan on taking her out to lunch and then doing something tomorrow evening.  I believe that I have her a gift that will surprise and yet please her.  :)

She has grown more beautiful every year to me and she is very precious in every way.  She is everything that I ever wanted and also everything that I didn’t even know that I needed.  She is my love!  Happy Birthday Sarah!

Control your urge

The other day I was reading the newspaper when I came across a story of a 61 year old man who had become aggravated at a small child and slapped the child in the face 5 or 6 times.  The man was arrested for this act of violence when he let his urges get the best of him.  We all can become irritated and aggravated in certain situations.  We have to be aware that at times we will have urges that will be detrimental to our life.

The Bible talks about controlling our urges when it discusses self control.  It is so important that the Bible mentions it when describing the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  The word translated “self-control” in the NIV is rendered “temperance” in the King James Version. It comes from the word “strength” and means, “one who holds himself in.” To be self-controlled is to not live in bondage to the desires, passions and appetites of the flesh. While “self control” is a good translation of the Greek word, it’s a bit deceiving because we all know that we can’t control ourselves simply through our own willpower or self-determination. Self control is more than just self help. Paul speaks of our dilemma in Romans 7:18: “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good but I cannot carry it out.” Self control, biblically speaking, means walking by the Spirit, under the Lordship of Christ.

In order to fully understand self control, it may be better to describe what the absence of self control looks like. Proverbs 25:28 provides a description of the a person who is living out of control, “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” When the book of Proverbs was written, one of the main sources of strength and protection for a city consisted in the building and maintaining of walls. A wiped out wall was considered a breach in security. A city with walls in disrepair was a city with a shameful reputation. That’s one of the reasons Nehemiah was so motivated to begin a building campaign in Nehemiah 1:3. Those who lived in the capital were in “great trouble and disgrace” because the wall of Jerusalem was broken down. It was open to attack and ultimate destruction. The man or woman who lacks self control is like a city that has no effective defense. They are not able to resist the things that can destroy their lives and the lives of others. When occupants of a city for whatever reason neglected their own safety by failing to build and maintain strong walls, they would have been looked upon as a weak and foolish people. Likewise, when we forfeit the fruit of self control, we are feeble and not very wise.

The Bible offers several vivid examples of people who lived out of control lives. One of the most dramatic stories is of Samson, found in Judges 14-16. He is a portrait of self-destruction. As one of Israel’s judges, the Spirit of God empowered him. He was known for his strength and led God’s people for 20 years. One of his primary tasks was to protect his people from the influence of the pagan Philistines. But because he did not have self-control he instead visited Philistine prostitutes and eventually told Delilah about the secret of his power. Lacking sexual self control, he soon lost his hair, his strength and his life.

We’ve been created with a multitude of moods, passions, and desires. They all need managing. They must be under control or they will end up controlling us.  Our appetites and longings have their proper place. Self control is the Holy Spirit giving us direction ensuring that everything stays in its proper place and comes in at just the right time. To be self controlled is to be Spirit controlled.  There is no way we can develop self control on our own. There are more than enough people pulling us back into unrestrained living. The good news is that you don’t have to give in to them, or into your own desires. As you submit and surrender to the Spirit’s control, you can experience freedom and power that you’ve have not seen before.

Unplugged

Every once in a while my blackberry starts acting up on me.  I normally just cut off the power and remove the battery and it starts working like it is supposed to again.  All that I did was simply reset the device.

We all must at times go through a reset.  I like to call it unplugging for a while.  When I unplug I like to go to my house and do a few items around the house and take a nap.  I was reminded that even Jesus went away to recharge His batteries.  We should also take the time an opportunity to do the same.  If you do not take the time to reset then you will be like my blackberry and begin to not work properly.

Here is my question for the readers out there:  How do you unplug?

Sunday Recap

The numbers were 301 with 4 people accepting Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.  We had over 500 people come for the Harvest Blast.  It was crazy.

I am very thankful for all of the people who volunteered to make yesterday’s Harvest Blast happen.  Thank you so much!  I have a thousand thought rolling through my mind right now about what went right and also what went wrong (and a lot went wrong).  The highlight of the afternoon for me was when I called some of our core kids around me and asked if they had a good time and they responded with a resounding yes!

I am so thankful for my staff.  Tara and Tyler were exceptional.  As the lead pastor I have the final say on certain matters and on this event I blew one.  As a result, Tara took it on the chin.  I am sorry.  I failed not so much about the decision but because I failed to listen to the person who oversees that area.  Tyler was working early and still there when I left.  From pulling a tractor to refereeing in the inflatables, He rocked.

Here are some special thank you:

Charlie and Patricia Phillips:  Where in the world else would I turn without you guys?  You saved me on many levels.

Dee Register:  You and your crew did a great job in the kitchen.  When you plan for 225 and over 500 keep coming in and you survive tells you something about someone.

Rory Payne:  From start to finish you came through on the hay ride.   Every time I looked at the trailer it was packed with people.

Steve Johnson:  I have found the permanent conductor for the kiddie train.  Seriously, you did a great job.  Also thanks to Kenny Thomas for getting the train ready to roll.

The Tweens:  This class was outstanding!  They worked so hard all day from funnel cakes to face painting, cotton candy, and everything else.  I love you guys!

Candice Long: Thank you for taking pictures of everyone

The Cooks:  I know that you are worn out and probably flipped burgers and turned hot dogs in your sleep.  Thank you so much!

To the New Life team:  Your sacrifice has not gone unnoticed by me or more importantly by God.  Thank you!

I know that I have left people out but I want you all to know that I love you.

Saddened

I was so saddened to hear yesterday of the passing of a college friend Kevin Knight.  I remember Kevin for being a jokester who almost always had a smile on his face.  I later spent a year in Kentucky and worked youth camps with him and I found out that Kevin had the awesome ability to work a crowd.  I will never forget his rendition of “Shark Attack”.  He passed away yesterday after getting H1N1 and then developing pneumonia.  He leaves behind a wife and two children.  Kevin was serving on staff at Praise Cathedral COG in Greer, SC.  My heart aches for his family.

I also received news that a dear friend of mine Charles Stephens was informed by the doctors that he had 2 months to a year to live due to his cancer.  They told him that they could not treat him due to the advance stage.  Charles has a special place in my heart as we worked so many hours together trying to build the Omega COG when I was pastor there.  I have no idea how many pastoral visits that we did, but it was a tremendous amount.  I know what the doctors say, but I also know that I serve the greatest doctor.  I ask that everyone who reads this blog please keep Charles Stephens in your prayers.

The cost of Christianity

I woke up this morning with a song in my head from my youth.  I can hear it ringing over and over as my grandfather would play it on his organ.  The words were “Jesus use me and oh Lord, don’t refuse me.  Surely there’s a work that I can do.  And even though its umble, help my will to crumble.  Though the cost is great, I’ll live for you.

As I was singing that song this morning I asked myself “what is the cost serving Jesus?”  The answer for me is extremely simple.  It is the sacrifice of self.  It is not doing what I desire or what I long to do, but what God’s will is for me.  Paul wrote this in 1 Corinthians 15:31 ”I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.”  I have to choose to die daily to myself and sacrifice my will for His.

This is my cost.  What is yours?

Playground Equipment

Well, well, well.  It looks like we have the opportunity to get some more playground equipment for the church soon.  Once again God has opened a door for us to walk through.  I am not going to reveal all of the pieces yet but it looks like at least three new items.  It will require a lot of work to get and put up, but it can be done fairly inexpensive (we hope).

We have steadily been adding equipment since the first item went up.  It is really exciting to see the kids enjoying the playground.  It really does my heart good.  God is blessing us so much and I am thankful for His hand of provision.

For a South Georgia Sunday it was cold outside yesterday.  I hope that it warms up for next weeks Harvest Blast.

We had 188 in attendance and I felt the presence of the Lord so strong yesterday.  It is time that we take people’s crutch away, letting them lean on us.  The music was really good yesterday.  Marshall has been doing a great job.  Thank the Lord that we serve a God who is always on time.

We got a busy week as we prepare for the Harvest Blast.  Make plans to be there and bring your friends and family.

It has been a week for sure……

This has been some kind of week.  I am not sure that it has been a bad week but I am not so sure that it has been a good week.  I know that it has been a very busy week.  Today will not be any different.

I have to finish my newspaper article first thing this morning.  Then all eyes will be turned toward getting the food ready for the football team.  I have promised Bethany that she can go to the game this evening so that is how we plan to finish the day.

If you were not at church on Wednesday night you missed the announcement that our Associate Pastor Danny Joiner has been appointed as interim Pastor at a church in Byron.  We are hoping that will be for just a short period as he works to bring stability to a tough situation.   Be in prayer for him and also this church.  That happening does effect us in several areas.  First of all it changes our praise team drastically.  Thankfully, Marshall Johnson will be stepping in to take over the piano duties on Sunday.  I am so thankful for Marshall and his family coming to New Life.  It has been a blessing.  Secondly, it creates a leadership vacuum in our congregation.  That simply means that everyone must step up and do their part.  I know that you will.  I believe in New Life and more importantly I know that God is in control!
